A box of dates for a kenduri, a tray for wedding hantaran, a few kilos for the family before Ramadan: these are the orders where buying online saves real legwork. You can compare listings at night and keep a written record of what was agreed. Every date sold in Malaysia is imported, so what you are really choosing is a variety, an origin and a pack size. This guide walks through that choice for orders placed on someone else's behalf or for an event.
Start from the occasion, then pick the date
Write down who the dates are for before you open a single listing. For a hantaran tray, looks matter. For a kenduri, quantity matters more, and umrah gifts may call for many small packs instead of one big box. Each of these points to a different pack size, and sometimes to a different variety.
Demand peaks before and during Ramadan. Hari Raya, weddings, kenduri and umrah gifts are other peaks in the year. If your event falls in one of those weeks, send your first message early so there is time to compare quotes.
Matching texture to the event
Texture is the easiest way to narrow the list. Medjool, originally from Morocco, is large and very soft with a rich caramel taste, and you can read more about Medjool dates before you ask. Ajwa comes from Madinah. It is small, roundish, near-black and soft, with finely wrinkled skin, and Kurma Nabi is a market name for it.
For a chewier date, Mabroom from the Madinah region is long, slender and reddish-brown. Deglet Noor, from Tunisia and Algeria, is golden and translucent. When it is sold still on the stem it is called kurma tangkai, and the stem is no sign that it comes from Madinah.
Mazafati from Bam in Iran is dark, very soft and high in moisture. It needs refrigeration. Plan for fridge space before ordering it for an event.
Grades, weights and the price per kilo
Listings often carry a grade such as A, AA, AAA or Jumbo. These are each importer's own size sorting, not an international standard, so ask what the grade means on that particular listing. To compare two offers fairly, take the pack price and divide it by the net weight in kilograms. A cheaper-looking pack can turn out dearer per kilo once you do the sum.

One message that covers the whole order

Put everything in the first message: the variety, the net weight per pack, how many packs, the delivery postcode and the date of the event. If the dates are going straight to someone else, give their address and say so. A written thread like this is also handy when you check the parcel later.
When the parcel arrives
Open it on the day it comes. Check the variety name, the pack count and the net weight against the quote in your chat. If anything does not match, photograph it and reply in the same thread while the details are fresh. Mazafati goes into the fridge as soon as it has been checked.
