Swap a 50g chocolate bar (about 260 calories, 27g sugar, almost no fibre) for four dried dates (about 280 calories, 32g sugar, but 6g fibre) and the calorie count barely moves — the difference is what comes with the sugar. That is the honest comparison to make if you are managing weight and still want something sweet in the afternoon.
Reading the label, not the hype
A typical dried date (Deglet Noor or Medjool, about 7-8g) carries 20-23 calories, 5g of carbohydrate and under half a gram of fibre per piece. Multiply that by however many you actually eat — most people underestimate a "handful" by two or three dates. Weighing a portion once, on a kitchen scale, tells you more than any article will.
Where dates beat processed snacks
Potato chips at 150 calories per small bag give you salt, fat and almost nothing else. Dates at a similar calorie count give you potassium, magnesium and fibre alongside the sugar. Neither is a "diet food" — but if you are going to spend the calories on something sweet or salty anyway, the date leaves you with more in return.
Buying by grade, not by guesswork
Wholesale grading (A, AA, AAA) tracks size and moisture, not calorie content, so a smaller-grade date is simply fewer calories per piece for the same taste. If portion control matters to you, buying a smaller grade and eating the same number of pieces is a cheap way to cut calories without cutting the habit. Our guide to grade and texture differences covers what changes between grades besides size.
Stocking up without overbuying
Dates keep for months refrigerated in a sealed container, which makes pre-portioning practical: split a kilogram into small bags of four or five on the day you buy, and you have already done the portion control before hunger makes the decision for you. Demand for dates spikes around festive seasons — see our note on seasonal buying patterns — so buying and portioning early also means better stock availability at your usual price.
