Raw Snacks And Treats – Good Alternative To Junk Foods!

Dates arranged on a plate as a raw snack tray

Raya open houses run for weeks, and by the third or fourth visit most tables look the same: keropok, kuih lapis, a tray of biscuits from the same three brands. Dates are a cheap way to put something different on the table without cooking anything.

A 500g box of good Safawi or Mariami dates covers a small coffee table for a full afternoon of visitors. Pit them the night before if you're short on time, or leave them whole with a small bowl for the seeds — either way takes less prep than frying a single batch of keropok.

Why dates work for an open house

Unlike kuih, dates don't go stale, sweat, or need refrigeration once the box is opened. They can sit out from morning till the last guest leaves without drying into something inedible or attracting ants the way syrup-based kuih does. That matters when the table stays laid out for six or eight hours at a stretch.

They also solve a real problem: guests who don't eat much sugar-heavy kuih, or who are watching what they eat, usually still take a couple of dates. It's an easy "safe" option to offer without asking about anyone's diet.

Arranging the tray

Skip the fancy fan-out you see in catering photos — it looks nice for five minutes and falls apart the moment someone picks one. A shallow bowl or a flat plate with the dates in a single layer, seeds already out, is easier for guests to grab one-handed while holding a cup of teh tarik.

Pair a plain date bowl with something crunchy next to it — cashews, or a small dish of biscuits — so people can mix textures. Some hosts split a box between two smaller bowls placed at opposite ends of the table instead of one big pile in the middle, which spreads the traffic and stops one corner of the table from being picked clean first.

Buying for the season

Raya demand pushes prices up in the weeks before the festival, so buying two to three weeks early usually gets a better rate than buying the week of — check current kurma prices before stocking up. A 500g–1kg box per 15–20 guests is a reasonable estimate if dates are one of several items on the table rather than the main dish.

Store unopened boxes somewhere cool and dry, not in direct sun near a window — heat softens them faster and can bring out a slightly fermented smell if the visit season runs long. Once opened, an airtight container keeps a half-finished box in good shape for the following week's visits.
