Junk Food – 5 Healthy And Delicious Substitutes

An iftar table tends to fill up fast — fried kuih, sweet syrup drinks, and whatever dates were grabbed last-minute from the nearest shop on the way home. Nobody plans it that way, it's just what's closest to hand after a full day without food. A few small swaps can shift the balance without taking the fried snacks off the table entirely.

Dates first, everything else after

Breaking fast with dates before anything else isn't just tradition — it's also practical. A stomach that's been empty all day handles the natural sugar in dates far more gently than it handles fried food or a sugary drink straight off the bat. Put the dates in the middle of the table, not off to the side, so they're what gets reached for first.

Date water instead of syrup drinks

The bright syrup drinks are tasty but mostly just added sugar and colouring. Soak a handful of pitted dates in warm water for about 15 minutes, mash lightly, and strain — you get a naturally sweet drink that chills well in the fridge. It doesn't taste identical to syrup, but most people who try it once end up keeping it in the rotation.

Nut-stuffed dates alongside the fried kuih

No need to remove the fried kuih from the table. Put a plate of dates stuffed with almonds or cashews right next to it instead. Dates fill you up faster because of the fibre, so people naturally reach for fewer of the fried items once the dates are already there.

Stocking up for the month

Buy enough for a week or two at a time and keep it in an airtight container somewhere cool — dates left sitting out near a hot stove while cooking for iftar toughen up and lose flavour fast. Restock in smaller batches rather than buying one huge box for the whole month.

For monthly iftar-table supply, check the pembekal kurma listings that sell by the box, browse the dates fruit range for a grade suited to daily eating versus gifting, and see healthy food for a few other swaps that fit an iftar spread.
