Homemade dog meals on a normal schedule: batch cooking and storage
The people who stick with homemade dog food long-term almost all cook in batches, not meal by meal. Here's how that actually works.
Cook once, portion for the week
Pick a protein — chicken thigh, turkey, beef mince, or white fish, all plain — and cook a large batch alongside rice or sweet potato and a cooked vegetable like carrot or green beans. Split it into daily portions while it's still warm; it's easier to divide evenly than after refrigerating.
What never goes in the pot
Onion, garlic, chives, grapes, and raisins — toxic to dogs at any quantity, batch-cooked or not. No seasoning salt, no stock cubes. This list doesn't get relaxed just because you're cooking for the week instead of one meal.
Storage: fridge vs. freezer
Portions kept in a sealed container last three to four days in the fridge. Anything beyond that, freeze it — individual portions keep well for up to two months and thaw overnight in the fridge. Label containers with the date; homemade food doesn't carry a printed best-before like kibble does.
Don't forget the calcium
A batch that's meat, carb, and vegetable is missing calcium relative to what a dog needs on an everyday diet. Ground eggshell or a vet-recommended supplement, added per portion or mixed into the whole batch before freezing, closes that gap.
Can a date go into a batch?
Occasionally, and only as an extra, not a batch ingredient cooked in with everything else. Dates aren't toxic to dogs the way grapes and raisins are, but they're high in sugar and fibre — a small pitted piece handed over on its own, now and then, is the safer way to give it rather than mixing it into stored meals. Always remove the pit; it's a choking and blockage risk regardless of how the fruit is prepared. Skip dates for an overweight or diabetic dog unless a vet says it's fine.
Getting the portion size right
Weigh portions when you first start batching so you know your dog's actual amount — it's easy to under- or over-fill containers by eye, and that shows up as weight change within a few weeks either way.
Batch cooking turns homemade dog food from a daily chore into a weekly one. The rules don't change with volume — they just get applied once instead of every night.
